Eugenie Bouchard, the former world number five, has had a long and arduous recovery journey on the WTA Tour. Since reaching her peak in 2014, the 28-year-old Canadian has battled a slew of form issues and injuries. Her singles form has steadily declined in recent years, and a shoulder injury kept her out of contention for a little longer in 2021. Eugenie had only played in two tournaments prior to the Chennai Open; she lost in the first round of the Vancouver Open to Arianne Hartono, and in the second qualifying round of the US Open to Linda Noskova. In India, the current World No. 902 defeated Joanne Zuger and Karman Thandi to reach the quarterfinals.
Nadia Podoroska, ranked 298th in the world, also had a slow start to the season. However, unlike Bouchard, the Argentinean has had a successful season thus far. Although the 25-year-old has primarily concentrated on the ITF circuit, the momentum she has gained there will most likely help her advance on the circuit. Nadia reached the semifinals in Den Haag and Versmold and finished second in San Bartolome de Tirajana. She most recently competed in the US Open, where she was defeated in the first round by Anna Karolina Schmiedlova. Here in Chennai, she first defeated Kyoka Okamura in straight sets before defeating Tatjana Maria in three sets (3-6, 6-2, 7-6). (8). In her career, Podoroska has yet to reach a singles final.
