Botic Van De Zandschulp and Beibit Zhukayev will take on each other in the round of 32 of the 2022 ATP Astana Open on Monday, October 3.
After squandering the opportunity to advance to the quarterfinals in Tel Aviv last week, Botic Van De Zandschulp would be disappointed. He defeated the defending ATP Pune winner Joao Sousa with ease in the first round before falling to Liam Broady in a three-setter the following day, forcing him to withdraw from the quarterfinal. The Dutch #1 is currently riding a six-match winning streak in the opening round on all surfaces and has gone 2-0 in opening-round games in indoor competitions this year. His failure to successfully defend significant points at the US Open last month was made up for by a number of excellent performances during the year, which helped him rise to his current best ranking of #22.
During the previous ATP Astana (Nur-Sultan) tournament in 2021, Beibit Zhukayev’s ranking was below the top-700. However, over the past ten months, he has made some unexpected improvement and has earned a well-deserved main-draw wildcard in his home event this week. He hasn’t even participated in an ATP qualifying match. Throughout the 2022 season, World #326 has consistently fought above his weight. In these nine months, he has won or played in competitive matches multiple times as the underdog and has come near to winning his first title a few times on the ITF circuits.
