Anna Bondar and Elina Avanesyan are scheduled to face each other in the first round of the 2022 WTA Transylvania Open on October 10.
Anna Bondar comes to Cluj Napoca with a 35-27 season record. This season, the Hungarian, who prefers clay to other surfaces, is 25-12 on clay and 8-12 on hard courts across all levels. Bondar, ranked 61 in the world, reached the semifinals in Budapest and Rabat and the quarterfinals in Lyon, Istanbul, and Palermo. She did make a few lower-level semifinals, including one at the WTA 125 in Budapest a few weeks ago. Bondar last competed in Parma, where she was defeated in the first round by Mayar Sherif. The 25-year-old, who reached a career-high ranking of 50 in July, has dropped 11 places since then, but she will be hoping to regain her position.
Through the qualifying rounds, Elina Avanesyan made it to the main draw. In the first qualifying round, the Russian defeated Romania’s Briana Szabo 6-1, 6-0. The 20-year-old continued her winning ways in the second qualifier, defeating Tamara Korpatsch 6-4, 7-5 on Sunday. During the one-hour and 45-minute contest, Avanesyan converted 6 of 8 breakpoints and saved 4 of 8. The World No. 126 is also a clay court specialist, having played in all 11 ITF finals on the surface, where she has a 4-7 record. Avanesyan finished second in one of these finals this year at ITF Cordenons in Italy. This year, the Russian is 3-4 in the main draws on the tour.
