Matteo Berrettini and Roberto Carballés Baena will face each other in the second round of the 2022 ATP Firenze Open October 12.
While Berrettini has competed in the Davis Cup and the Laver Cup, this will be his first match since the US Open. Matteo Berrettini, who had beaten Andy Murray and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, had stumbled in the tournament’s quarterfinals, losing in straight sets to Casper Ruud. Berrettini has won all four singles matches since then, including three at the Davis Cup against Borna Coric, Sebastian Baez, and Elias Ymer, and one at the Laver Cup against Felix Auger-Aliassime. Berrettini should not be concerned about facing a player who has never been ranked higher than 71st in his career with that kind of form under his belt.
Daniel Elahi Galan is ranked slightly higher than Carballes Baena and was a 3/5 favorite to beat the Spaniard in the first round. Carballes Baena’s 6-2, 6-1 win over Galan is a huge accomplishment for him, especially given his overall record on hard court surfaces – indoor or outdoor. Carballes Baena, for example, had competed in four hardcourt competitions this year and had only won one match. It happened in the first round of the US Open. He’d like to show that his one-sided first-round victory wasn’t a fluke, but facing the world’s number 16 would be an impossible task.
Matteo Berrettini and Roberto Carballés Baena are scheduled to face each other in the second round of the 2022 ATP Firenze Open on Wednesday, October 12. The tournament is scheduled to begin on October 10 and end on October 16.
