Nikoloz Basilashvili and Arthur Rinderknech are scheduled to face each other in the second round of the 2022 ATP Moselle Open September 22.
Before arriving in Metz this week, Nikoloz Basilashvili had lost all six of his matches. He was also on track to suffer his seventh straight loss as he trailed Zizou Bergs by a set and a break in the first round. The Georgian, however, advanced to the second round as a result of his opponent’s terrible injury that occurred midway through the second set and ultimately led to his retirement from the match. In recent months, the former world #16 has struggled both on and off the tennis court, and he currently lacks the motivation to play. Since the ATP Doha tournament in February 2022, he hasn’t won consecutive matches, and he hasn’t won a full match on an indoor hard court since the ATP Vienna last october.
In the first round of the ATP event in Metz, Arthur Rinderknech defeated Jaume Munar Clar in three sets to earn his first main-draw victory in more than three months. He dominated the second set, which allowed the Spaniard to tie the match, before rallying to win the match, 6-2 2-6 7-5, after falling behind by a break. During his breakthrough season in 2021, the Frenchman earned seven quarterfinal (or better) appearances on the main circuit, but he has only achieved that feat twice this year and not once since February.
