Day 3 of the 2022 Barcelona saw Miami Open champion Carlos Alcaraz beat Korean tennis player Soonwoo Kwon in the round of 32. The match lasted three sets, although it did not seem that way at one point. The Spaniard, who recorded his first career victory in the competition, dominated in the first set and seemed set to make short work of Kwon. However, the Korean came out of nowhere in the second set and completely turned the tide on Alcaraz. However, the 18-year-old has the experience of playing under pressure situations, most recently in the Miami Open. The Spaniard did not let his guard down even once in the final set and recorded a comfortable 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 victory.

Auger-Alliasme takes tough victory

Alcaraz will face fellow Spaniard Jaume Munar who recorded a shock 6-1, 6-4 victory against ninth seed Nikiloz Basilashvili. Third seed Felix Auger-Alliasme also advanced to the next round as he beat Carlos Taberner in what was a tense tie. The scoreline at the end of the match read 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 in Alliasme’s favour. It was a commendable attempt by Taberner but the Canadian was just too strong for him. The Canadian will face Frances Tiafoe in the next round. The American recorded a 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 win over Hugo Dellien.

Alex de Minaur and Ugo Humbert put up a great show as the Aussie took a hard-fought victory against the Frenchman. The scoreline at the end of the tie was 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in de Minaur’s favour. There was a shock on the cards, however, somewhere else.

Ramos-Vinolas knocked out by unseeded Harris

Playing at home and seeded 17th, Albert Ramos-Vinolas must have expected to go past the round of 32 at the Barcelona Open but his progress was brought to an abrupt end by South African tennis Lloyd Harris. Harris recorded an incredible 6-3, 6-4 victory to dump Ramos-Vinolas out of the competition.

Sixteenth seed Alexander Bublik was also eliminated from the competition after he suffered a 6-3, 6-1 loss against Ruusuvuori. An all-Spanish affair involving Pablo Carreno Busta and Bernabe Zapata Miralles saw the former recording a 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the next round. Marton Fucsovics also advanced to the next round after beating Federico Delbonis 6-2, 6-1.

A couple of matches were suspended on the day, Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Ilya Ivashka and Federico Coria vs Grigor Dimitrov.
