Italian tennis player Lorenzo Musetti recorded an opening day victory over Argentina’s Sebastian Baez at the Barcelona Open on Monday. The win shot the 20-year-old’s record on clay to 5-2. The scoreline at the end of the match read 7-5, 7-5 in Musetti’s favour. He will face British tennis player Daniel Evans in the round of 32. Musetti has been quite impressive on clay so far and his previous win came at the Monte Carlo Masters when he beat world no. 9 Felix Auger-Alliasme.

Speaking about his most recent victory, the Italian said that it was not a simple task. “He played well. I was playing every point at 100 percent and there were a lot of rallies,” Musetti said. “He is a good fighter and it was not easy to close out the match. But I am in the second round and I am really happy.”

Musetti will face Evans in the round of 32. The two have faced each other only once before, in 2021 at Caligari. The Italian emerged victorious in that tie in three sets. “It was a really spicy match. A really tough match, especially at the end,” Musetti said. “Tomorrow I am ready to do battle again and let’s see what I can do.”

Kwon, McDonald, Nakashima advance

Elsewhere, Korean tennis star Soon Woo Kwon recorded a rather comfortable 6-4, 6-4 win over Benoit Paire. The Korean never looked in doubt throughout the tie even though the official stats make it seem like a close encounter.

USA’s Mackenzie McDonald also advanced to the round of 32 but he had his work cut out for him. Hugo Grenier forced him to play two tie breaks in three sets of which the American won one. McDonald had to fight his way back from a set down to win 7-6 (7-2), 1-6, 6-7 (2-7). He will have a stern test waiting for him in the form of sixth seed Diego Schwartzman in the next round.

McDonald’s compatriot Brandon Nakashima also made it to the round of 32 after a straight-sets victory against Nicolas Alvarez Varona. The first set was an absolute thriller as it went to a long tie break. The second set was straightforward. The score at the end of the tie was 7-6 (8-6), 6-3.
