The ATP Tour 250 tennis competition known as the men’s Swedish Open takes place in July in Bastad, Sweden. The International Swedish Hard Court Championships were the name of the competition when it was first held in 1948. The men’s competition took place on the Grand Prix tennis circuit between 1970 and 1989. South African Eric Sturgess won the first three competitions. Ilie Nastase (1971), Bjorn Borg (1974, 1978-1979), Mats Wilander (1982-1983, 1985), and Rafael Nadal are some more well-known winners (2005). In order to make room for the new hotel under the coastal bleachers, the stadium where the tournament is hosted underwent renovation in 2002.

Dominic Thiem appears to have taken the first few steps in the right direction. Thiem required three sets to go through Spaniard Roberto Bautista-Agut in the second round of the Bastad Open in order to win consecutive matches for the first time. It’s been that type of season for Sebastian Baez, who has slowly risen in the rankings and in confidence to his current career-high ranking of 34th in the world. Can he repeat that performance against a previous Grand Slam champion and a clay-court specialist?
