On Wednesday, Sebastian Baez of Argentina and Sebastian Korda of the United States will square off in the second round of the 2022 ATP Citi Open.
Sebastian Baez improved this year, making an impact at the highest level after winning six titles out of nine Challenger finals the previous year. This season, Baez has a 25-19 overall record, although 21 of those victories have come on clay. He is 2-5 this year and 4-7 overall at the tour level on hard courts. He played one hard court match on the Challenger Tour and lost it, but at the ITF level, he is 11-4 on hard courts. The 21-year-old Argentine has already competed in three ATP finals this season, taking home his first victory in Estoril and placing second in Santiago and Bastad. But now that he has achieved so much on clay, his real test will come. Can the 31st-ranked player in the world keep winning on hard courts?
U.S. No. 54 In the first round on Tuesday, Sebastian Korda defeated Ilya Ivashka in straight sets to end a three-match losing streak. The American, who had fallen to Taro Daniel in the first round of play the previous week, overcame a break down to win the opening set. Then, in the second set tiebreak, the American edged off the Belarusian to win 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) overall. During the one hour and forty minute match, Korda had 10 aces, 28 wins, and 85 percent of the points on the back of his opening delivery. He defeated the World No. 49 by converting 2 of 4 break points and saving 2 of 3. This year, he hasn’t had the same impact; his finest performance was a run to the semifinals in Estoril. He participated in just one quarterfinal this year on hard courts, which was in Delray Beach.
Sebastian Baez and Sebastian Korda will face each other in the second round of the 2022 Citi open on Wednesday, August 3. The ATP 500 competition is scheduled to start from August 1 and end on August 7 this year.
