Second seed Felix Auger-Aliassime battled back from a break down twice in the second set, eventually defeating local hope Alex Hernandez on Wednesday. The World No. 9 dominated the first set, converting the only break point he faced and saving the only one he held. However, the World No. 521 presented a difficult test in the second round. Hernandez took a 2-5 lead in the second set, but couldn’t hold on as Auger-Aliassime claimed five straight games to win 6-3, 7-5. Felix improved to 31-17 this season with the victory in his Los Cabos debut. Auger-Aliassime won their only meeting in Lyon in 2019.
No. 92 in the world Steve Johnson defeated Thanasi Kokkinakis in the second round on Wednesday after dropping the opening set. Johnson made a strong comeback in the second set after wasting four break opportunities, including a set point, in the first set, which he lost in a tiebreak. He broke the Australian early and then held on to force the final. Johnson had previously defeated Argentine fortunate loser Gonzalo Villanueva in the opening round. With the two victories, the 32-year-old American improves to 13-11 in 2022 and will compete in a second quarterfinal this season. Following a second round walkover, he advanced to the final eight in Newport.
