ATP Italian Open 2022 quarter-final round up: Ruud beats Shapovalov in thriller, Djokovic advances

The Norwegian Ruud came out as the victor after what was a thrilling contest that saw a brilliant tie-break in the very first set.

The quarter-final of the 2022 ATP Italian Open has concluded and it sure delivered when it comes to entertainment. The best match of the round arguably was that between Denis Shapovalov and Casper Ruud. The Norwegian came out as the victor after what was a thrilling contest that saw a brilliant tie-break in the very first set. Ruud will face top seed and world no. 1 Novak Djokovic in the semis. Djokovic had a routine win over eighth seed Felix Auger-Alliasme. Although the match did see a tie-break in the second set, the Serbian never seemed to be in doubt. Elsewhere, Stefanos Tsitsipas ousted home favourite Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev made short work of Chilean tennis player Cristian Garin.

Ruud, Shapovalov play out thriller

Norway’s Casper Ruud and Canada’s Denis Shapovalov played at the top of their games and gave fans a quarter-final to remember. The match was over in a couple of sets but the first on saw a lengthy tie-breaker. Ruud eventually came out as the victor and would carry his momentum into the second set to get the result. The score at the end of the match was 7-6 (9-7), 7-5. Ruud scored five aces and a break point. He also had a superior win percentage in both the first and second serves with 78% and 68% respectively.

Djokovic ousts Auger-Alliasme

Novak Djokovic won his quarter-final against Felix Auger-Alliasme 7-5, 7-6 (7-1). While the second set was a tight affair that went to the tie-break, Djoker Nole never seemed in doubt. The world no. 1 is on a great run of form and is undoubtedly the favoutite for the Rome crown. The Serbian scored four aces and three break points. His win percentage in the first and second serve was 74% and 59% respectively.

Tsitsipas gets the better of Sinner

Home favourite Jannik Sinner will no longer be a part of the 2022 Italian after being beaten by Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. The Italian put up a brilliant fight in the first set as it went to a tight tie-breaker but the Greek was just too string for him. The second set was a much simpler task for Tsitsipas as he recorded a fine victory. The fourth seed scored 10 aces and three break points in the match. His win percentage on the first and second serves was 71% and 50% respectively.

Zverev breezes past Garin

While everyone else had to contend with tie-breakers, Alexander Zverev recorded a comfortable win against Cristian Garin in his quarter-final tie. The German recorded a 7-5, 6-2 win to make it through to the semi-finals. Zverev hit four aces in the match and scored four break points. The second seed had a superior win percentage on both serves. He recorded 70% on the first serve and 56% on the second.
