ATP Finals 2022: Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Daniil Medvedev in 3 set match

Daniil Medvedev, the former World No. 1, was defeated by Stefanos Tsitsipas in a marathon encounter that lasted two hours and 21 minutes. Greek triumphed 6-3, 6-7 (11-13), and 7-6. (1). Daniil Medvedev’s late comeback attempt was defeated by Stefanos Tistsipas, knocking the Russian out of the ATP Tour Finals. In the Red Group, Tsitsipas is now second, trailing Novak Djokovic. The second semifinalist from the group will be decided by his matchup against Andrey Rublev on Friday. Djokovic has already earned a spot in the semifinals.

This week in Turin, Tsitsipas is attempting to become the 11th player to win multiple Nitto ATP Finals championships. At the famous end-of-year tournament in 2019, the Greek won in his debut match, defeating Dominic Thiem. Prior to making the final the previous year, Medvedev won the trophy at the ATP Finals in 2020. However, the 26-year-old was eliminated from this year’s competition after falling to Andrey Rublev this week as well.

Tsitsipas was up against it after winning the opening set 6-3. Tsitsipas maintained his composure and served up to the very end of the second set despite the Russian coming back. But he made a careless mistake right before the last second. In a 13-point tiebreaker, Medvedev rallied to prevail 13-11.At every chance, the Greek stepped inside the baseline and advanced successfully. He finished points at the net by taking advantage of Medvedev’s deep court positioning. He earned 80% (36/45) of the net points. In order to win, he also used his heavy hitting in the fast conditions to force the fourth seed into mistakes.

“I felt reborn after entering the contest again, and what a fantastic way to end it. Outside, it was quite exhausting. I’m so pleased that I was able to join the group in enjoying it after overcoming this. It’s a fantastic victory, and I’m quite pleased of how I battled. For me, it never really appeared to be coming to an end. Even in the final game when he was serving, I continued to believe that if I could hit a few balls in, a chance may arise. And sure enough, it occurred, Tsitsipas said following the match.
