Aryna Sabalenka and Camila Osorio will take on each other in the second round of the 2023 WTA Madrid Open on April 29.
A month after losing to Sorana Cirstea in Miami, Aryna Sabalenka got her revenge. She went five-for-five on breakpoints and defeated the Romanian, a two-time quarterfinalist in Caja Magica, 6-4, 6-3. The world No. 2 is now 24-4 this season, coming off her third consecutive runner-up finish in Stuttgart. In Madrid, she has an unusual track record. Despite losing in the first round on three of her four visits, she won the title in 2021, defeating Ashleigh Barty and Jessica Pegula. She is looking to go deep once more, especially after reaching four finals in the last four months and winning the Australian Open and Adelaide.
Camila Osorio has won two junior matches in two days to make an impressive start to her Madrid Open debut. She dominated Clara Burel in straight sets and defeated Marta Kostyuk in two hours and 14 minutes, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. She saved 11 of 12 breakpoints in the final two sets to defeat the 32nd-seeded Ukrainian. She had not won a match in nearly three months when she arrived in Spain. Her season win-loss record had fallen to 4-4 after she was forced to withdraw from Indian Wells, Miami, and Bogota due to an adductor injury. She has now advanced to the third round of a WTA 1000 event for the first time in her young career since her return.

Aryna Sabalenka has a 1-0 lead. She lost only three games in their third-round match at Wimbledon two years ago; however, it was Camila Osorio’s accomplishment to have advanced that far given her previous lack of grass experience. The Colombian is 0-4 against the top 5 players, having lost all four matches in straight sets.
