World No. 23 Zhang Shuai pushed Anett Kontaveit to the limit in a challenging first round that lasted two hours and 21 minutes. She defeated the veteran, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, relying on 40 winners and 10 aces at the expense of 32 unforced errors. The second set was particularly tense because she almost blew a 5-2 lead. After a 1-3 trip through Australia, during which she only succeeded in defeating Julia Grabher, the world’s No. 85, in Melbourne, she arrived in Abu Dhabi. The fact that the former world number two hasn’t advanced past the quarterfinals of a WTA 250 tournament since Doha and Stuttgart in early 2022 is a sign of her problems with injuries and Covid.

Vera Zvonareva and Magdalena Frech were eliminated from the qualifiers by Shelby Rogers, who then shocked Leylah Fernandez, a former US Open finalist, in the first round in two hours and 20 minutes. The American won 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 despite being forced into a decider because she didn’t drop her serve and held all four breakpoints. The 30-year-old has struggled over the past few months as he has only achieved one quarterfinal-level performance since the conclusion of the grass-court season in 2017.
