Anastasia Potapova and Marketa Vondrousova will take on each other in the semi-final of the 2023 WTA Linz Open on February 11.

This was the third time this week that Anastasia Potapova had to push herself. In the quarterfinals, she faced 2015 finalist and 2014 semifinalist Anna-Lena Friedsam. They battled for an hour and 43 minutes before she defeated the German qualifier, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. In Linz, the eighth seed has played three rounds in five and a half hours. She has participated in two indoor European tournaments and six straight three-set matches. She advanced to the quarterfinal in Lyon last week before losing to Maryna Zanevska. She started her trip off here in Austria by making a comeback against Lucia Bronzetti, which was followed by a marathon match lasting two hours and 44 minutes against Jule Niemeier. The 21-year-old is about to compete in her 10th semifinal of her career (4-5). She participated in five semifinal matches in 2022 alone, turning the one in Istanbul into her first WTA title and the one in Prague into a runner-up finish. She has lost to Marketa Vondrousova in Budapest in 2019 and Anna Blinkova in Cluj-Napoca in 2018, both indoor semifinal losses for her.

Marketa Vondrousova has had an easy journey to the semifinals, and it only got easier after qualifier Dalma Galfi retired in the quarterfinals after just five games. The former world No. 14 has played just two hours and 38 minutes on the court in three matches this week, barely breaking a sweat. The 89th-ranked Czech player made her Linz debut against three players outside the top 90. She defeated Rebeka Masarova 6-1, 6-1 and Viktoriya Tomova 6-3, 6-3 without having to face a break point. Her record for the year is 7-2; this includes victories over Ons Jabeur in Melbourne’s third round and Kaia Kanepi in Adelaide’s quarterfinal. The former finalist at Roland-Garros, who missed six months of the middle of last year due to injury, has just qualified for her first WTA semifinal since she withdrew from the Dubai WTA 500’s semifinals in February 2022. She is going for her first final since taking home the silver medal in Tokyo in 2021, but she has either lost or withdrew from her last four semifinal matches.
