Ana Bogdan and Clara Burel will take on each other in the first round of the 2023 WTA Lyon Open on January 31.
In her earlier trips to Lyon, Ana Bogdan had no luck. She suffered a painful 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 loss to Tereza Martincova in the first round of the 2020 tournament, and a gruelling 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 loss to eventual finalist Dayana Yastremska at the same stage last year. She blew one match point in both the second and third sets. The Romanian has made up some lost ground in the most recent few months after plummeting outside the top 100 in the middle of last year. She has returned to the top 70 thanks to a string of accomplishments on hard and clay courts, including winning the 125K title at home, making it to the WTA 250 final in Warsaw, and reaching the semifinals in Portoroz and Parma.
Clara Burel would be happy to return to her native country’s indoor hard court, where in December she recorded back-to-back quarterfinal finishes at 125K Angers and Limoges. She started the 2023 season two weeks ago with a qualifying run at the Australian Open, which resulted in a defeat to Barbora Krejcikova in the second round. The Frenchwoman lost her opening match in Lyon in 2020 but returned the following year to the city to advance to one of her two WTA quarterfinal appearances so far (the other being the 2021 Lausanne final). She won three sets against her countrymen Alize Cornet and Aliaksandra Sasnovich before falling to Fiona Ferro after taking a set.

0-0. The 21-year-old Clara Burel has struggled since achieving her career-best ranking of No. 74 almost a year ago; as of right now, she hasn’t triumphed in a WTA main draw match outside of major tournaments since Warsaw in July. She aims to achieve her highest ranking victory since defeating Alison Van Uytvanck and Elena Rybakina at the US Open.
