Indoor hard courts in Europe are where Alycia Parks is continuing her incredible run of form. Despite being down 3-5 to Danka Kovinic in the quarterfinals, she went on to win the final four games of the first set and the final five games of the second to defeat the seventh seed 7-5, 6-2 in just over an hour. The 22-year-old, who made her top 200 debut exactly one year ago, struggled in the 2022 season and only achieved two quarterfinal-level or higher ITF finishes in the first nine months. She has changed since October, beginning with her first WTA quarterfinal in Ostrava, where she defeated Maria Sakkari and Karolina Pliskova. She confirmed her top 100 debut in December by winning back-to-back 125K titles in France and Andorra (beating Linda Noskova and Marketa Vondrousova en route), and she currently has a 13-match indoor winning streak. She advanced to her first WTA semifinal this week by defeating Petra Martic and Julia Grabher in three sets.

A seeded opponent was defeated by Maryna Zanevska twice in a row. In less than two hours, she defeated the fifth-seeded Russian, Anastasia Potapova, who was ranked 43rd in the world, after saving 15 of 16 breakpoint opportunities in the second and third sets. The Belgian had never advanced past the WTA quarterfinals on hard courts before this week, with her best finishes on this surface coming in the second rounds of the 2013 Linz, the 2022 Melbourne Summer Set, and Hobart a few weeks ago. Importantly, though, she won 125K Rouen in her most recent indoor match on French courts in October. The 2021 season was the earliest that the 29-year-old entered the tour. She has competed in three WTA semifinals over the past two years, all on clay, and has gone 1-2 in those matches. In July 2021, she won the title in Gdynia, Poland, but was eliminated in the round of 16 in Lausanne and Bernada Pera in Hamburg in July 2021.
