Alexander Zverev was taken off court in a wheelchair after a nasty fall in the match against Rafael Nadal in the French Open semifinal on Saturday. The German world number three needed to undergo a surgery on torn ligaments in his right ankle following the incident in the Roland Garros semifinals. Rafael Nadal went on to win his record extending 22th Grand-Slam title.

The incident

When Zverez turned his ankle badly and shouted out in pain, he was behind 7-6 (10-8) 6-6 to Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who went on to win the men’s singles competition and clinch a record-extending 22nd Grand Slam championship. The ligaments in his right ankle were completely destroyed. Zverev would have taken over as world number one if he had reached the final at Roland Garros and won his first major in Paris.

‘Wimbledon is out of the question’

Zverev’s brother Mischa said in an interview that the injury is severe and it would be really difficult for him to go ahead in Wimbledon. “Wimbledon is out of the question for him. He has damaged all three of the lateral ligaments in his right ankle.” The 25 year old German tennis star took it to Instagram to express that surgery was the only option for him to get back in action sooner.

Next week I’ll reach a career high ranking of number 2 in the world, but this morning I had to undergo surgery. My rehab starts now and I’ll do everything to come back stronger than ever!” expressed Zverev.

This year’s Wimbledon takes place from 27 June to 10 July.
