What’s next for Grigor Dimitrov ?

Grigor Dimitrov, a three-time Grand Slam semifinalist, was halted in the semifinals of the Vienna Open last October by none other than Daniil Medvedev. Prior to landing in Rotterdam this week, the Bulgarian has won five matches in three events. Two of those came earlier this year at the Australian Open, where he was knocked out in the third round by eventual champion Novak Djokovic. The World No. 28 has, however, made a strong comeback at the present ABN AMRO Open. In 2018, the 31-year-old finished second to Roger Federer in this tournament. He’s been showing hints of that hot streak all week, with victories over Aslan Karatsev, Hubert Hurkacz, and Alex de Minaur. While the first two matches were won in straight sets, Dimitrov had to work hard to beat the Aussie in a difficult quarterfinal 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(6) after saving two match points.

H2h against Medvedev

Medvedev leads Dimitrov 4-2 in their head-to-head. In their most recent meeting, which also happened to be their lone indoor hardcourt match, Medvedev won 6-4, 6-2 in Vienna last year.

Prediction

Dimitrov faces a difficult battle on Saturday, especially now that Medvedev is looking threatening once more. In the quarterfinals, Medvedev produced his finest match of the week, routing Auger-Aliassime 6-2, 6-4 with ruthless accuracy from the baseline. The Russian was razor-sharp throughout the competition, committing only five unforced errors. He dropped serve once and broke the Canadian’s serve four times. After such a fantastic performance, the former World No. 1 will be fired up and determined to reach the final in Rotterdam for the first time. Dimitrov must perform at his peak to take on this version of Medvedev. The Bulgarian maintained his cool under pressure despite facing match points, but it took him two hours and 33 minutes to defeat the tenacious Alex de Minaur. There’s a risk the 31-year-old won’t have enough in the tank when he faces the Russian. Dimitrov has the firepower to make a contest out of this, but it remains to be seen how long he can maintain a high level against an unstoppable Medvedev.
