No.6 in the world Carlos Alcaraz defeated Alex Molcan in straight sets on Saturday, advancing him to his fifth final in 2022. The 19-year-old has been in outstanding form this season; with the victory on Saturday, his record now stands at 39-5. The top seed struggled in the opening set as Molcan put up a valiant effort and twice overcame a break down. The Slovak also avoided two set points in the tenth game to avoid a tiebreak, which was ultimately required to decide the match. Alcaraz jumped off to a quick 6-0 lead in the tiebreak before Molcan tried to rally, scoring two points in a row. However, the Spaniard had built up too much of an advantage for the Slovak to overcome, and he ultimately won the set to love. Alcaraz proved unstoppable in the second set after winning the first one, winning it quickly to defeat Molcan 7-6 (7-2), 6-1. Alcaraz had won three straight matches in a row. Alcaraz, a five-time tour winner, has never lost an ATP final. In order to win his four titles this year, he had to overcome Diego Schwartzman in Rio, Casper Ruud in Miami, Pablo Carreno Busta in Barcelona, and Alexander Zverev in Madrid.

No.62 in the world Francisco Cerundolo‘s hopes of winning consecutive championships were crushed when Lorenzo Musetti defeated the Argentine in the semifinal in Hamburg on Saturday. The 20-year-old Italian ended the Bastad Open champion’s eight-match winning streak by defeating him 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) in an hour and 55 minutes. Musetti won in straight sets for the third straight time by saving 5 of 8 break points and converting 4 of 5. Like Alcaraz, he had a difficult start to the competition and had to hold off two match points in the second set before defeating Dusan Lajovic after coming from behind. As the competition went on, he gained stronger, beating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Emil Ruusuvuori in the second round and quarterfinals, respectively, in straight sets to go to the last four. Musetti won on Saturday, advancing him to his first ATP final. He has a record of 17-16 for the year and has Sunday to win his first championship.
