Friday’s quarterfinal saw top seed Carlos Alcaraz thrash Karen Khachanov in straight sets to get to his first semifinal since the Madrid Open. The world no. 6 is close to making a fifth final in 2022 after winning four titles already this year. Alcaraz won victories in Rio de Janeiro, Barcelona, and Madrid while winning three of his four titles this year on clay. His lone victory on a hard court occurred in Miami. The 19-year-old appears to be in outstanding form once again. He battled back from a set down to win the match in the deciding set tiebreak, defeating Germany’s Nicola Kuhn in the opening round. After escaping the opening round scare, Alcaraz went on to easily overcome Filip Krajinovi before playing his finest tennis on Friday in the quarterfinal. Alcaraz defeated Khachanov 6-0, 6-2 in in 69 minutes. He remained unbroken throughout the contest, and he finished 5 of 11 attempts to dispatch the Russian with ease.

After making it to the semifinals on Friday, Alex Molcan is one victory away from reaching his third season championship. When Borna Coric retired injured in the second set, Molcan had already established a 2-0 advantage. Molcan had previously won the challenging first set in a tiebreak. The 24-year-season old’s record now stands at 21-12. In two clay court tournaments this year, Molcan, who has yet to claim an ATP championship, came in second place, losing to David Goffin in Marrakech and Cameron Norrie in Lyon. The World No. 48 started his campaign in Hamburg by defeating Marko Topo of Germany 7-5, 6-3, and then eliminated Pablo Carreno Busta, the fourth seed, in a nail-biting three-set match in Round 2.
