Premier Italian forward Lorenzo Insigne has signed a one-year deal with Toronto FC, in a bid to move away from his home-town club Napoli as a free agent this summer, according to a report in goal.com. His contract with the Italian giants will come to an end on June 30, following which he is set to join the Canada-based club. The Euro 2020 winner was heavily linked with various clubs in Europe but he has chosen to move forward with the offer from Toronto FC. He is expected to fly to Canada to undergo his medical and other formalities on July 1.

His fellow countrymen, Sebastian Giovinco, who is the all-time leading goal-scorer for the club before parting ways with them to join Al Hilal in 2019 has been positive about his move to the club. He also wishes to unite with his former teammates and Insigne at Toronto FC and has made his intentions clear to return to Canada.

What does the deal hold for Insigne?

“The time has come for him to leave a comfort zone in Italy, with Toronto presenting Insigne with a five-year contract that is worth around €11.5 million (£9m/$13m) a year – with bonuses to be added on top of that,” according to a report in goal.com.

“An agreement between club and player is expected to be officially announced on January 10,” the report added.
Insigne had joined Napoli FC at the age of 15 from Olimpia Sant’Arpino. He, then, graduated through their academy and made his first-team debut under Roberto Donadoni in the summer of 2009-10.

However, a number of loan deals — Cavese, Foggia and Pescara — saw him lose an important phase, away from his boyhood club. He has made 414 appearances for the Serie A title contenders in the ongoing season and has registered 114 goals so far, making him fourth all-time highest scorer for the club.

Insigne, 30, has won the Coppa Italia twice (2013-14 and 2019-20) with Napoli and the Supercoppa Italiana in 2014. He was also named the Serie B footballer of the year in 2012 besides being the leading goal scorer in Coppa Italia, 2013-14.

His move to Toronto FC will boost their chance to win the MLS Cup. The Canada-based club has won the cup once besides winning the Canadian Championship seven times and the supporters’ shield once.
