AC Milan suffered a shock 2-1 defeat against Spezia in the Serie A fixture at San Siro on Monday. Rafael Leao had an excellent game for Milan as the Portuguese forward put the hosts in front on the stroke of half-time after Theo Hernandez missed a penalty kick. But Spezia fought their way back in the second half to register a historic victory. Kevin Agudelo equalized after the hour-mark before Emmanuel Gyasi scored the stoppage time winner. Rossoneri came into the match with an opportunity to go top of the points table following leaders Inter Milan’s goalless draw against Atalanta.

Milan started the match brightly as Leao was causing all sorts of problems to the Spezia defense down the left flank. The 22-year-old’s right-footed curler from the left side of the penalty area went inches wide of the far post.

Few minutes later, Leao went past Kelvin Amian before flashing a shot across the goal. Meanwhile at the other end Spezia left-back Arkadiusz Reca tested Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan from inside the box.

Milan were gifted a penalty in the 43rd minute following a foul on Leao by goalkeeper Ivan Provedel. The referee awarded a penalty after checking at the pitchside monitor. But Hernandez’ effort was dragged wide.

Leao broke the deadlock a couple of minutes later. The Portuguese international got on the end of a long ball from the back and lofted the ball over an advancing Provedel to give the lead to Milan.

Agudelo and Gyasi secure historic win for Spezia

After the break, Leao continued to be impressive down the left flank as he set up Alexis Saelemaekers at the near post but the Belgian’s effort went wide. Spezia were playing with more intent in the second half as Amian’s effort was saved by Maignan before Agudelo eqialised in the 64th minute. Daniele Verde’s cross from the left flank was poked home by the Colombian.

Both sides tried hard for the advantage and the goalkeepers were kept on their toes. In the 92nd minute, Junior Messias put the ball inside the net but the referee had already blown the whistle following a foul on Rebic, and so the goal didn’t stand.

In the dying seconds of the match, Gyasi got on the end of a low cross from the left and maintained his composure before slotting home to make it 2-1 just before the final whistle.

The win helped Spezia to 14th spot in the points table with 22 points from as many games while Milan are placed second, with 48 points, two behind Inter.
