Inter Milan assistant manager Massimiliano Farris was delighted with his side’s performance in the 5-0 win over Salernitana at San Siro on Friday. It was a dominant performance from the Nerazzurri to take all three points and move to the top of the league standings. Lautaro Martinez was the star performer of the night as he netted a hat-trick while Edin Dzeko put the icing on the cake with a brace after the hour-mark. Meanwhile Nicolo Barella also had a great game as he was involved in three of the five goals Inter scored on the night.

“We expected this performance, because during this difficult moment, we knew that we needed a spark to get us going again,” assistant manager Farris told Sky Sport Italia, stepping in because Inzaghi lost his voice again.

“Salernitana were unbeaten in four and had the first chance to score in the opening minutes. We prepared to attack the space, use the wings, and seeing Lautaro and Dzeko celebrate goals was all we wanted.

“Unfortunately, we had no chance to work in training lately, because there was this seemingly infinite run of fixtures. We did a lot of psychological work, told the lads the tests didn’t show any changes in the physical fitness, while we had no doubts on the quality of Lautaro and Barella.

“We relied on the strength of this group and this evening saw the Inter everyone knew.”

In the previous two games against AC Milan and Liverpool, Marcelo Brozovic made very little contribution as the opposition man-marked him pretty well. However, yesterday, Inter tweaked their system a little bit, Brozovic dropped further back and took the man with him and created some extra space for Barella and Hakan Calhanoglu to exploit.

The plan worked very well as Barella provided the assist for the opening two goals. The Italian played a perfect through ball to pick Martinez inside the box and the 24-year-old made no mistake as he slotted home past Luigi Sepe into the far bottom corner on 22 minutes.

And then in the 40th minute, Inter doubled their lead, once again through the combination of Martinez and Barella. This time the midfielder delivered an inch-perfect pass down the centre to release Martinez on goal. The Argentine did well to hold off Ranieri before finishing into the same far bottom corner.

“In the last two games, we tried to change our style and make it a quicker vertical passing move. We worked on going back to our strengths, to controlling the midfield and getting those passes with Calhanoglu, Brozovic and Barella.

“Now more or less everyone is trying to stick a man on Brozovic to close him down. He reads the game so well and with support from his teammates to create those spaces and channels, he can do what he did tonight.”
