Inter Milan came from behind to defeat Venezia 2-1 in the Serie A fixture at San Siro on Saturday. Eden Dzeko scored a last-gasp winner to seal the win for Simone Inzaghi’s side after Nicolo Barella had canceled out Thomas Henry’s opener. Inter saw their eight-game Serie A winning streak ended by a goalless draw against Atalanta on Monday before defeating Empoli 3-2 to enter the Coppa Italia quarter-finals. The Nerazzurri remained at the top of the points table with 53 points from 22 games.

Joaquin Correa was ruled out for at least a month after suffering a hamstring injury in the previous game, so Lautaro Martinez partnered Dzeko up front. Meanwhile Venezia had eight players out with COVID-19.

Early in the match, Dzeko got on the end of Barella’s cross from the right flank, but the Bosnian’s first-time volley lacked power and the goalkeeper made a comfortable save. David Okereke forced a save from Samir Handanovic from distance with his counter-attack,

Against the run of play, Venezia went ahead through Henry in the 19th minute. Ethan Ampadu delivered a deep cross for Henry to head home off the underside of the crossbar.

However, the visitors then lost Vacca Junior to a hamstring injury and Maximillian Ullmann made his debut. Meanwhile at the other end, Martinez’ acrobatic effort went over the bar. Inter’s pressure finally paid off as they levelled the score five minutes before break.

Dzeko’s winner

Matteo Darmian delivered a deep cross which found Ivan Perisic inside the box. The Croatian’s first-time volley was brilliantly saved by Venezia goalkeeper Luca Lezzerini, but the rebound was slotted home by Barella from close range. A VAR check for a potential Dzeko foul during the build up ended in Inter’s favor.

After the restart, Stefan de Vrij’s header from Hakan Calhanoglu’s free-kick was spilled by the goalkeeper but Dzeko couldn’t take advantage as his effort from a couple of yards went over the bar before colliding with Lezzerini. Okereke tested Handanovic with a powerful drive at the near post.

Inter were trying hard for the winner as Federico Dimarco’s low free-kick was pushed away by Lezzerini. The comeback was finally achieved in the 90th minute, when Denzel Dumfries delivered a perfect cross from the right flank for Dzeko to head home from six yards out. Inter Could have extended their lead but Arturo’s Vidal’s attempt from Alexis Sanchez’ assist was brilliantly saved by Lezzerini.
