World Archery, the international governing body for the sport of archery, has announced the launch of its Gender Equity Award. This award is designed to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to promoting gender equity and ensuring equal opportunities in the sport of archery. The award is open for nomination to World Archery National Federations, continental associations, Executive Board members, and gender equity committee members. The World Archery Federation, popularly known as WA, is an organization based in Lausanne, Switzerland. It comprises 156 national federations and other archery associations. The International Olympic Committee recognizes the body as the official organization for the sport of Archery.

About the Awards

The Gender Equity Award was first launched in 2009 and was presented to Xiuzhi Zhang, a judge and archery competition manager at the Beijing 2008 Olympics. The award is now open to individuals of any gender who have made a positive impact on gender equity within the sport of archery. World Archery’s gender equity committee will assess all nominations, and the awards will be presented at the World Archery Congress, which is scheduled to take place in July in Berlin to coincide with the World Championships.

Yuko Okura, the chair of World Archery’s gender equity committee, announced the relaunch of the award in recognition of International Women’s Day. The award celebrates role models and inspirational figures who have made positive contributions towards gender equity and inclusion in archery.

In addition to the Gender Equity Award, World Archery has also announced the launch of a new Equal Opportunities Award. This award, which will be presented for the first time in 2025, will recognize federations that have made significant progress towards gender equity. This includes areas such as participation, both domestically and internationally, and projects that challenge gender bias or discrimination.

How has the sport promoted gender equality over the years?

Archery has a long history of promoting gender equity. In 1961, Inger Frith became the first female President of an Olympic sport when she was elected to lead World Archery. Since then, the sport has continued to lead the way in promoting gender equity and inclusion.

The Gender Equity Award and the Equal Opportunities Award are both significant steps towards promoting gender equity in the sport of archery. These awards will recognize individuals and organizations who have made a positive impact on the sport and will inspire others to continue promoting gender equity and inclusion.
