Abhinav Bindra was born to a Punjabi family on September 28, 1982, in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. He attended Doon School in Dehradun and St. Stephen’s School in Chandigarh. He attended University of Colorado Boulder where he studied Business Administration. He trained for extended durations in Germany because he was motivated to train with the best equipment possible, which was then unavailable in India.

Bindra was the youngest competitor in the 1998 Commonwealth Games at the age of 15. Additionally, he was the youngest Indian competitor at the Sydney Summer Olympics in 2000. In the qualification round for the 2000 Olympics, he finished 11th with a score of 590. At the 2001 Munich World Cup, when he set a new junior world record with a score of 597/600, he won his first medal in international competitions, the bronze. That year, he won six gold medals at various international competitions and was honored with India’s highest sporting honor, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award.

He set a new Olympic record at the Athens Olympics in 2004, however, he was unlucky to not take home a medal. Following this, a severe back injury kept him unable to lift a rifle for a year, hampering his preparation for the Beijing Olympics 2008. With a score of 699.1, Bindra became the world champion in the 2006 ISSF World Shooting Championships and earned a spot in the 2008 Summer Olympics. Bindra went on to become the Olympic champion in the men’s 10-meter air rifle event at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing with a score of 700.5.

Bindra, who won the titles at the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2006 ISSF World Shooting Championships, is the first Indian to have held both the world and Olympic titles for the men’s 10-meter air rifle competition at the same time. Additionally, he represented India as a goodwill ambassador at the Rio 2016 Olympics after being chosen for that position by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). He announced his retirement on September 5, 2016. Abhinav was awarded the prestigious Blue Cross, the International Shooting Sport Federation’s highest achievement, in 2018.
