When and Where will the 37th edition of the National Games take place?

The state is considering hosting the National Games beginning in the first week of November. The precise dates would be revealed soon

The Indian state of Goa is on the route to holding the 37th edition of the National Games in the first week of November. The sports minister of Goa, Govind Gaude, announced the same on February 7, 2023, after his meet-up with the senior brass of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). Gaude headed a four-person delegation that met with IOA president PT Usha, vice president Gagan Narang, joint-secretary Kalyan Choubey, and other IOA officials.

The state is considering hosting the National Games beginning in the first week of November. The precise dates would be revealed soon, keeping in mind the international sports calendar from September 23 to October 8, 2023. An IOA delegation will soon visit Goa to assess the readiness and finalize the technical criteria for holding each sport very soon, according to the IOA announcement. In addition, the logo of the games will be published on April 15, 2023.

Major highlights from the last edition of the Games

The 36th edition of the National Games, also known as the National Games 2022, was held in Gujarat from September 29 to October 12, 2022. It spanned over six cities – Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, and Bhavnagar in the state of Gujarat. Although the games were conducted in Gujarat’s six largest cities, the cycling-track competitions were hosted in Delhi at the Indira Gandhi Cycling Velodrome.

On July 22, 2022, the official logo and tagline of the games were revealed. The logo featured an Asiatic lion with a sporting symbol and the Statue of Unity. “Celebrating unity through sports” was the official motto of the games. The Asian lion Savaj served as the 2022 Games’ mascot. The curtain-raiser performance took place at EKA Arena on September 4, 2022.

With a total of 128 medals, including 61 gold, 35 silver, and 32 bronze, Services took the top spot in the standings. Maharashtra took second place with 140 medals, including 39 gold, and Haryana clinched third place with 116 medals, including 38 gold. Sajan Prakash of Kerala received the award for Best Male Player in the 36th National Games, while Harshika Ramchandran of Karnataka got the award for Best Female Player. Top swimmer and Olympian Sajan won the award for the second time after claiming it back in the year 2015. A total of 36 different sports competitions were staged attracting about 7500 athletes from 36 states and union territories.
