Hidilyn Diaz claimed the women’s 55-kilogram division on Thursday in Bogota, Colombia, adding the coveted World Weightlifting Championship 2022 gold to her haul. The Tokyo Olympic gold medalist won all three gold medals in the snatch, clean and jerk, and total with a total lift of 207kg, defeating Rosalba Morales of Colombia and Ana Gabriela Lopez of Mexico. On the quest for her first gold medal at a world championship, Diaz lifted 93 kg in the snatch and topped the clean and jerk with 114 kg.  She attempted to lift 117 kg and 121 kg but was unsuccessful despite having secured the medal in the clean and jerk.

Diaz, the Filipina weightlifting superstar, has now added the missing World Championship title to her collection, which already boasts gold medals from the Olympics, Asian Games, and Southeast Asian Games. Diaz has been chasing world championship gold since settling for bronze medals in the women’s 53kg division in 2015 and 2017 and bronze in the 55kg division in 2019. After capturing the historic Olympic gold, she withdrew from the weightlifting world championships in Tashkent last year.

The 55kg category has been dropped from the Summer Games. As a result of this, she hopes to go up to 59 kg which would be her fifth and last Olympic Games in Paris 2024. Therefore it was her last significant competition in the 55 kg weight class. The IWF World Championships are the first competition that qualifies athletes for the Paris Games and offers significant ranking points.
