Singhraj Adhana won India’s eighth medal in the form of a bronze at the ongoing Tokyo Paralympics. Singharaj, who competes in the men’s 10m Air Pistol (SH1) event, finished with a total of 216.8 points. This was India’s second medal from shooting. The first was won by Avani Lekhara in the form of a gold medal in the women’s 10m Air Rifle standing (SH1) event on Monday.

Manish Narwal, who had topped the qualification round finished in the seventh position with a total of 135.8 points.

In the qualification stage of the men’s 10m Air Pistol (SH1) Singhraj had finished sixth. But when he inched closer to the finals, he started off brilliantly to go top of the rankings at one point in time.

Singhraj’s concentration shifted a bit in the fifth shot and he scored a 9.0and dropped to second as China’s Chao Yang took over the leaderboard.

In the next round of five shots, Singhraj shot three out of five shots in the 9s. But a 10.7 helped him remain in the top three even as others below him started to close the gap.

Chao Yang, on the other hand, maintained the top spot on the leader board.

In the elimination stage, Singhraj shot two 10.0s to keep hold of his second place. The other Indian in the match, Narwal, was struggling and was not able to perform the way he performed in the qualification stage.

Family’s support for Singhraj Adhana

Adhana’s family had extended their unconditional support for the para-athlete, even though they faced many financial hurdles. They created a shooting range of 10m and 50m at their premise so the athlete could train better.

Shooting is an expensive sport and so Adhana’s wife sold her jewellery in order for the now Paralympian to continue training. “Shooting is an expensive sport, and it was not easy pursuing it,” Singhraj said during an interview with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “My wife sold her jewellery to support my shooting dream.”

Everything became worthwhile as Singhraj began winning medals at the national level. In 2018, he made it through to the Para Asian Games and won a bronze. In that same year, he also won a silver in individual and gold in team event at the Chateauroux World Cup held in France.

In 2019, he won Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals in different events at the 62nd National Shooting Championships held in Kerala.
