India’s campaign at the Tokyo Olympics this year has been far from ideal so far. The country has only won one medal so far thanks to weightlifter Mirabai Chanu’s incredible performance on the very first day to land the silver medal. It was possibly the best start to an Olympics for the country but the other athletes have failed to carry on the momentum. The shooters have been especially disappointing as they were expected to bag at least one medal for the country. All hope is not lost, however. There is still hope in boxing, archery, and badminton as the likes of PV Sindhu and Deepika Kumari, among others, seem to be in a good run of form.

Day 6 at the Games was not all that bad for India. The nation might not have won a medal but a couple of athletes took one step closer to winning one. Shuttler PV Sindhu emerged victorious over NY Cheung as she looks to achieve her dream of winning a medal at the Games. Boxer Pooja Rani also displayed an incredible performance when she comprehensively won her pre-quarter-final and is now just one win away from claiming a medal for herself and the country. Rowers Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh finished sixth in the semifinal of lightweight men’s double sculls, which is the best result the country has had in the sport ever at the Olympics.

It was not as good for the other athletes. Shuttler B Sai Praneeth fell to a shock defeat against Holland’s Mark Caljouw while Tarundeep Rai crashed out of the men’s individual archery event. The Indian women’s hockey team fell to their third straight defeat as they were thwarted 4-1 by Great Britain.

July 29 can prove to be an important day for India at the Olympics as a number of top athletes will be in action. These include the likes of legendary boxer MC Mary Kom and Sindhu, among others.
