India’s star archer Deepika Kumari was ranked ninth after the conclusion of the women’s individual rankings round on Friday. After knowing the results, the archer said that her performance in the round had both positive and negative aspects. She hoped that she would perform better in the following round. The archer had started the round well as she was ranked fourth after the first half of the round. She had won 334 points at the time. However, towards the end, she slipped up a bit, and that ultimately cost her five places. The archer finished with a score of 663 out of a possible 720 points.

“The performance was good and bad, a little in between I would say,” Kumari said. “I don’t know why I wasn’t too good, but I’m planning to control my stuff so that I can play with it. I want to show my best performance here, and I’ll shoot it 100% in the next round. It’s good (to be here) but, at the same time, I just want to succeed,” the Ranchi-born athlete added.

Deepika will go up against Bhutanese archer Karma first as she aims to win a medal for India at the Tokyo Olympics. Karma was seeded 56th with a score of 616 out of 720 in the rankings round. On paper, it seems like a pretty comfortable tie for the Indian but one can never be sure when it comes to a stage as big as the Olympics. The tie is scheduled to take place on the afternoon of July 28.

The Women’s Individual Recurve Event will commence on the same date and Deepika vs Karma will be one of the many matches that will happen in that event on that day. In the earlier editions of the game, Deepika has had contrasting fortunes in the rankings round. At the Rio Games in 2016, she was ranked 20th after the round. In London in 2012, she was ranked eighth. It was also her debut Olympics.

A MEDAL FAVORITE

Deepika is one of the Indian athletes most likely to bring home a medal this year. She has all the momentum she could have asked for heading into The Games. She recently won the Archery World Cup Stage 1 and Stage 3 individual medals in Guatemala City and Paris respectively. Her win in Paris especially was met with nationwide adulation as it concluded only a few weeks before the Olympics’ commencement.

Deepika also won the mixed team gold along with her partner, Atanu Das in Paris in June. She is the only female Indian archer participating at The Games this year. If she did manage to win a medal, it would be hailed as a magnificent achievement, and being one of the top archers in the world right now, one can safely assume that her skill level and confidence are at a high.
