Paris 2024: Indian athletes who have qualified for this mega event

The Paris 2024 Olympic qualification has begun last year. The final list of qualified athletes is expected by June 2024. The Paris 2024 qualification event started in 2023 and will continue till June 2004 leading up to the main event, which will start on July 26. Indian athletes will be in all upcoming events in search of the 2024 Paris Olympics ticket.

Firstly, there is a quota system for all the athletes to qualify through their performances at designated competitions during the qualification period. The second method is through Olympic ranking which is based on total performances at various authorized events throughout the qualification period set for each sport.

The third only applies to specific sports like swimming and athletics, where meeting a pre-qualifying standard in any event at an authorized competition, held during the qualification period.In 2022, three Indian shooters qualified for the Olympics through a quota system. Bhowneesh Mendiratta was the first shooter to qualify through a quota for the ISSF world shotgun championships.

Indian athletes to qualify for Paris 2024 Olympics

Bhowneesh Mendiratta

Bhowneesh Mendiratta became the first athlete and earned India’s first 2024 Paris Olympics quota place in the shooting. He finished fourth in the men’s trap competition at the ongoing ISSF Shotgun World Championship in Osijek, Croatia. The 23-year-old shooter grabbed the Paris Olympic quota after he topped the second-ranking round match with a score of 24 out of 25 hits.

Bhowneesh missed the medal in the world championship. Being the first one to bow out with 13 out of the first 15 hits in the 35-shot medal match. Well, not many would expect a shotgun wielder to bring in the first Olympic quota for the country. Bhowneesh was born in Faridabad on 30th June 1999. His latest world ranking in men’s trap event is 144. During Junior Asian Championship 2019 at Doha, Bhowneesh won a silver medal in the men’s trap event.

Rudrankksh Patil

This young sensation secured a quota place for India for the Paris 2024 Olympics after winning the world cup gold. In just the second year of his international career, this 19-year-old shooter Rudrankksh Patil has already rose India’s hopes for Paris 2024. He added a world cup gold to his medal tally in Cairo. He defeated Germany’s Maximilian Ulbrich by 16-8 to secure the top position. It was fourth gold for him.

Patil belongs to Maharashtra. He was introduced to shooting at the age of 12 in 2015 at a school in Thane. It took him no time to settle in his discipline as he shot a bronze in his maiden national appearance in his first year. Patil continues to cover all bases ahead in the built-up to Paris 2024. He recently trained under legendary German coach Heinz Reinkemeier.

Swapnil Kusale

Swapnil Kusale won the third Paris 2024 Olympics quota for India at ISSF World Championship. He earned the quota in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions event, where he secured the fourth position. The 27-year-old had won the silver in the World Cup in Baku earlier in the season, and qualified with a high score of 593. He missed the bronze by 0.3 points to Jon-Hermann Hegg of Norway. He hails from Maharashtra. After a year of physical training, he had to choose one sport and he chose shooting. In 2013, he became sponsored by Lakshya Sports.In 2015, he won gold in the 50m rifle in the junior category at the 2015 Asian Shooting Championships in Kuwait. He also won the 59th National Shooting Championshipheld in Tughlakabad.

Akshdeep Singh

Akashdeep Singh qualified for the 2024 Summer Olympics. This is India’s first quota in athletics for Paris 2024 Summer Olympics and he became the fourth Indian athlete overall to qualify for the Games. The athlete from Barnala district has set a new national record in the 20-km walk with a time of 1.19.55. And because of this record, he qualified for the quota. Akashdeep Singh, an athlete from Kahneke village in Barnala district Akashdeep Singh has been preparing under the supervision of the coaches of the sports department at Baba Kala Mehar Stadium Barnala.

Priyanka Goswami qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympics and World Athletics Championships 2023 after meeting the qualifying standards in the men’s and women’s 20km race walk, respectively, at the National Open Race-Walking Championships 2023 in Morabadi, Jharkhand, on Tuesday. Goswami practiced gymnastics at school for a few months before switching to athletics. She represented India at the Tokyo Olympics, finishing in 17th position. She won the silver medal in the 10000-meter walk at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Goswami is the first Indian woman to win a medal in race walk with a silver in the 10,000m event. She belongs to Muzaffarnagar U.P.

Indian Race walkers Vikash Singh and Paramjeet Singh Bisht have also qualified for the Paris Olympics 2024 and World Championships 2023. They secured the second and third place respectively at the Asian 20km Race Walking Championships 2023. They were a part of the open category sent by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) for the event, and not the official squad.
