The ISSF World Cup 2023, held at the MP Shooting Academy Range in Bhopal, witnessed China claim both gold medals on Day two of the tournament. India managed to pick up a silver and bronze medal, with Varun Tomar and Rhythm Sangwan winning silver and Rudrankksh Patil and R. Narmada Nithin winning bronze in the 10m air rifle mixed team event. India’s medal haul so far consists of one gold, one silver, and two bronze medals. China is now the leader in the medal standings with three gold and two bronze medals. While Azerbaijan, Germany, and Hungary have won a silver medal each and are in third place.

What happened in the 10m air rifle mixed team event?

In the 10m air rifle mixed team, also the first medal match of the day, Rudrankksh Patil and Narmada Raju scored a combined score of 632 during the qualification. They finished third and made it to the bronze medal match against China’s Zhang Qiongyue and Yu Haonan. The Chinese pair had finished fourth with a similar combined score. In the bronze medal match, both Indian shooters performed exceptionally well, with a solid grouping that helped them beat the Chinese pair 16-8 in what was a much closer match than the score suggests. The high point of the match was in the fifth series when both Rudrankksh and Narmada shot perfect 10.9s. Speaking after the match, Narmada said that there was pressure, but they had a really good match, and they quite enjoyed it.

In the mixed team air rifle competition, China and India each entered two teams. While the second Chinese combination of Huang Yuting and Sheng Lihao took gold by beating Hungarians Istvan Peni and Denes Eszter 16-2 in yet another final. The second Indian pair of Hriday Hazarika and Tilottoma Sen shot 628.1 in the qualification to place ninth.

What happened in the 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team Event

In the second medal event of the day, India’s Varun Tomar and Rhythm Sangwan faced China’s Qian Wei and Liu Jinyao in the 10m air pistol mixed team gold medal match. Tomar, who had already won a bronze medal in the individual air pistol event on Wednesday, and Sangwan fought hard but eventually went down 11-17 to the Chinese pair. In the initial stages of the final, it appeared that the Chinese pair would easily win, but the Indians made a strong comeback, going from 14-4 to 15-11 before the Chinese clinched the 15th series to secure the gold medal. During the qualifications earlier, Qian and Liu had the best score of 586. India’s Varun and Rhythm got second place with 581.
