It has been revealed that Iran will attempt to field athletes in 30 different sports at the Asian Games this year in Hangzhou. During an Executive Board meeting in Tehran, Seyed Manaf Hashemi, secretary general of the National Olympic Committee of the Islamic Republic of Iran (NOCIRI), spoke on the subject. Iran participated in more than 24 sports at Incheon 2014, and the total is the same as the number of sports they did at the most recent Asian Games in Jakarta-Palembang.

According to Seyed Manaf Hashemi

At this year’s Games in the Chinese city, which are held a year late between September 23 and October 8 after being postponed in 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there are expected to be 482 medal events in 40 sports. We have until June to make changes, either increasing or decreasing the squad, according to Hashemi, who noted that the initial registration for the Asian Games in Hangzhou includes 30 sports. “We have met with federations more than 30 times, but due to high costs, we are unable to send everyone as in previous years.

The NOCIRI Executive Board reviewed its membership in the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), and new members were suggested to join various OCA Committees at the General Assembly, which is scheduled to take place on July 8 in Bangkok. As representatives in the Olympic Council of Asia, we are aiming for twelve members, according to Hashemi. “Some former colleagues will be nominated again, and some new people will also be suggested. “Hashemi also gave some thought to the hiring of foreign coaches, stating, “Our preference is to use local coaches, but in some sports, it is necessary to be on par with other countries, so we will look at hiring foreign coaches.”

Iran’s volleyball team in upcoming Asian games

In September and October of this year, the men’s volleyball team from Iran will compete in the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, and attempt to complete a perfect treble. After winning the gold medal for the first time at Incheon in 2014, they went on to defend their title at Jakarta-Palembang in 2018, and they will now compete for a third consecutive gold in Hangzhou. The team will hold a joint training camp and friendlies with Serbia in Tehran before the 2023 Volleyball Nations League (VNL), according to The Tehran Times, as part of its busy year of preparations.

Iran in Asian games

With 20 gold medals, 20 silver medals, and 22 bronze medals, Iran placed sixth in the medal standings at the 2018 Asian Games. In 1974, when Tehran served as the host city, Iran had its best performance, winning 81 medals, including 36 gold ones, to place second overall. The nation’s best showing at an international competition was at the 2014 Incheon Games, where they won 57 medals, including 21 gold ones, to place fifth. Iran sent athletes to compete in the Asian Games for the first time in 1951, and it has done so ever since, except in the years 1954, 1962, and 1978.
