Dmitry Medvedev, the former president of Russia, has indicated that the National Federations of Russia might change their affiliation from Europe to Asia as the Asian Federation is at a high level. This suggestion comes as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) looks into a possible route for the ‘neutrals’ return of Russian and Belarusian competitors. The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has assured competitors from Russia and Belarus a warm welcome at Asian competitions, including the postponed 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou. Last week, the OCA’s Athletes’ Forum backed its position. In fact, the Chess Federation of Russia has even consented to join the Asian Chess Federation. Nonetheless, despite the ban on Russian citizens from entering the continent due to the war in Ukraine, the majority of Russian National Federations have chosen to remain in Europe.

Concerns have been made about Russian and Belarussian athletes competing in Asian tournaments. However, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) believes that quota places for its competitors at the 2024 Paris Olympics will be unaffected. However, international federations, notably World Archery, have banned Russian and Belarussian competitors from competing in Asia for the purpose of qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympics. During its meeting from Tuesday, March 28, to Thursday, March 30, the IOC Executive Board is scheduled to address the position of Russia and Belarus.

What Dmitry Medvedev Had to Say

The IOC’s decision to withdraw its advice that athletes from both nations refrain from competing has prompted debate and anger in Ukraine. The former president of Russia from 2008 to 2012, Dmitry Medvedev, agreed that there were advantages and disadvantages to a move toward Asia in sports. However, he insisted that it should be a possibility to consider. Medvedev said to Russia’s official state news agency TASS, “Regarding the transition to Asian Federations, if it is beneficial for athletes, why not? Somewhere it gives pluses, somewhere it gives minuses. But where the level of the Asian Federation is high, we must move. If anything, we will return later or stay there.”

Following Vladimir Putin’s election in 2012, Dmitry Medvedev, who held the office of President for one term, was replaced. He has developed authoritarian tendencies lately and is a vocal advocate of the conflict in Ukraine. In addition to criticizing the restrictions and bans put in place as a result of the conflict in Ukraine, he noted that it is “extremely difficult” for Russian competitors. He further added, “Obviously, the fact that they do not participate in competitions is the result of politically motivated decisions of sports organizations. It’s a shame for them. For everyone, including, of course, the Olympic Committee and its leadership.”
