Lovepreet will aim to extend India’s lead in Weightlifting as he competes in Men’s 109 kg class on August 3. The weightlifter clinched a silver in the same category at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships.  He lifted a combined weight of 348 kg with 161 in the Snatch & 187 in the Clean and Jerk. With this, he stood 12th overall at the World Weightlifting Championships conducted concurrently at Tashkent. Cameroon’s Ngadga Nyabeyeu who won the gold in the Commonwealth championship with a 360 kg lift will also compete in Birmingham 2022.

Lovepreet bagged a Gold medal at the Junior Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships held in Gold Coast, Australia. The weightlifter who was a member of the Chandigarh Amateur Weightlifting Association then lifted a total weight of 325 kg (150 kg in Snatch + 175 kg in Clean & Jerk). Lovepreet is also a Bronze medallist at the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships in Kathmandu.

India has won a total number of 12 medals in Commonwealth Games 2022 so far, with eight medals coming from Weightlifting. Mirabai Chanu (Women’s 49 kg), Jeremy Lalrinnunga (Men’s 67 kg), Achinta Sheuli (Men’s 73 kg) are the gold medallists. While Vikas Thakur (96 kg), Sanket Sargar (Men’s 55 kg) and Bindyarani Devi (Women’s 55 kg) are the silver medal winners. Harjinder Kaur (Women’s 71 kg) and Gururaja Poojary (Men’s 61 kg) have earned the bronze for India.
