ISSF World Championships Rifle/Pistol 2022: Rudrankksh Balasaheb Patil becomes World Champion, secures Paris Olympics 2024 quota

Rudrankksh also became the second Indian after the Beijing Olympics 2008 champion Abhinav Bindra to become a gold medalist in 10m Air Rifle at the Worlds.

Rudrankksh Balasaheb Patil clinched the gold medal in the men’s 10m Air Rifle competition at the ongoing ISSF World Championships Rifle/Pistol 2022 in Cairo, Egypt. He defeated Danilo Dennis Sollazzo of Italy by 17-13 in the gold medal match to emerge as the World Champion. With this, the 18-year-old also grabbed the quota for the Olympics 2024 to be held in Paris. He also became the second Indian after the Beijing Olympics 2008 champion Abhinav Bindra to become a gold medalist in 10m Air Rifle at the Worlds. The youngster also won the 10m air rifle competition at the National Games 2022 held in Gujarat.

The first two games were shared by Rudrankksh Patil and Danilo Sollazzo before the Italian took a 10-4 lead after the seventh series and an 11-7 advantage after the ninth. The Indian then proceeded to make a comeback, winning the next set to make it 11-9. In the 11th series, Danilo Sollazzo improved the score to 13-9. However, Rudrankksh Patil didn’t look back after that, shooting above 10.5 in the next four sets and thus claiming the gold.

Earlier, Rudrankksh had topped the qualifications of the event with a score of 633.9. He secured the second position in the ranking round and earned Paris Olympics 2024 berth. Teammate Ankush Kiran Jadhav also qualified for the ranking round but finished eighth there. The 10 m air rifle event consisted of a star-studded field like Yang Haoran, two-time Olympic champion, Tokyo 2020 gold medalist William Shaner, and silver medalist Lihao Sheng. Lihao and Haoran finished third and fourth respectively in the ranking round.

1) 25m Pistol Team Women Junior
India’s Naamya Kapoor, Vibhuti Bhatia, and Esha Singh routed Germany’s trio of Nina Alice Adels, Vanessa Seeger, and Lydia Vetter 17-1 to win the bronze medal.

2) 50m Rifle Prone Mixed Team Junior
The duo of Surya Pratap Singh and Nishal narrowly missed out on a medal with a fourth-place finish, losing to United States’ Katie Lorraine Zaun and Rylan Kissel (16-6) in the bronze medal match.

3) 10m Air Rifle Women
India’s Mehuli Ghosh, Meghana Sajjanar, and Elavenil Valarivan finished 10th, 13th, and 19th respectively during the qualification round.
