Indian weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga wins gold at Commonwealth championships

Gold medalists in each category at the ongoing Commonwealth Weightlifting championships will directly qualify for the 2022 Birmingham CWG.

India’s teenage weightlifting sensation Jeremy Lalrinnunga wins the gold medal in the men’s 67kg category at the Commonwealth Championships at Tashkent, Uzbekistan on Friday. Jeremy lifted 305kg (141kg + 164kg) in the men’s 67kg event. He lifted 141kg in the snatch while successfully lifting 164kg in the clean and jerk section. Although he missed out on surpassing his personal best of 360kg, his efforts were enough to get him a gold medal. Meanwhile his personal best is a record 306kg which came in 2019.

He also created a national record in snatch event en route to his podium finish but was unable to do the same in the clean jerk section where he failed to lift 168kg. The 19-year-old had suffered a knee injury in April during the Asian Championships here. He had finished fourth at the World Championship in May but was unable to make the cut for the Tokyo Olympics. 

The Performance of the Indian weightlifters will play an important role. Gold medalists in each category at the ongoing Commonwealth Weightlifting championships will directly qualify for the 2022 Birmingham CWG.

Sheuli, Sanket and Bidyarani clinch Gold while Jhilli bags silver

Sheuli claimed the top place podium with an effort of 316kg (143+173) in the 73kg category. He had won a silver medal in Junior World championships in May. Earlier, Guru Raja also bagged a silver medal to attain a second place finish in the men’s 61kg event. He successfully lifted 265kg, 117 in snatch and 148kg in Clean and Jerk Section.

Sanket Mahadev Sargar also clinched the gold medal in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on December 8. Sanket finished on top of the podium after successfully lifting 113kg in the men’s 55kg snatch category. Meanwhile the Indian weightlifter also registered a new snatch national record.

Jhilli Dalabehera bagged a silver medal in women’s 49kg category at the ongoing event on Wednesday. Jhilli lifted a total of 167kg. She successfully lifted 73kg in snatch while managing to lift 94kg in clean and jerk.

Meanwhile Bidyarani won the gold medal with a total lift of 198kg. Her best effort in snatch was 84kg while managing to lift 114kg in clean and jerk.
