Since the beginning of the modern Olympic movement at the Summer Olympics in Athens in 1896, fencing has been competed at every Summer Olympic Games. In the Summer Olympics, three forms of fencing are contested namely Foil, Épée, and Sabre in both individual and team categories.

1) Foil fencing – A foil is a little thrusting weapon. Only the torso is the valid target and no double touches are permitted.

2) Épée fencing – An Épée is a heavy thrusting weapon. The entire body comes under the valid target region and double touches are permissible.

3) Sabre fencing – A Sabre is a light cutting and thrusting weapon. Everything above the waist region except the back of the head and hands are considered a valid target. Double touches aren’t allowed.

Fencing Qualification Process

A total number of 212 quota places will be available for Fencing in Summer Olympics 2024. This includes 102 quota places for both men and women, 6 host country quota places, and 2 universality places. This consists of quotas in both individual and team events. 144 quota places are allocated for 48 teams, while 60 places are reserved for athletes in individual categories.

Fencing Qualification Process: Teams

According to the points earned throughout the competitions listed below (from 3 April 2023 to 1 April 2024), the Team senior Ranking list for each weapon is determined:

1. Senior Team World Cup Competitions

2. Senior Team World Championships

3. Senior Team Continental Championships

The four teams with the highest ranking at each weapon on the FIE Official Senior Team Ranking as of 1 April 2024, regardless of the zone from which they come, qualify for the Olympic Games. The top-ranked teams at each weapon from each of the four FIE zones (Africa, America, Asia-Oceania, and Europe), as determined by the FIE Official Senior Team Ranking as of 1 April 2024, advance to the Olympic Games. These teams are those who are ranked from 5th to 16th.

Fencing Qualification Process: Individual Athletes

Three athletes in each of the eight teams (24 athletes) who qualified through team qualification will be eligible to compete in the individual competition for each weapon in their respective categories. These 24 athletes are not to be considered among the 60 quota spots mentioned in the table below.

The points accumulated during the competitions below (from 3 April 2023 to 1 April 2024) determine the Individual Official Ranking List:

1.  Individual Grand Prix competitions

2.  Individual senior World Cup competitions

3.  Satellite competitions

4.  Individual senior World Championships

5.  Individual senior Continental Championships

All athletes who qualified via team qualification, listed by National Olympic Committee (NOC) and by weapon, are now removed. Only the top-ranked athletes by NOC, zone, and weapon are retained for the other NOCs. The six highest-ranked athletes on the FIE senior Adjusted Official Ranking (AOR) by zone, with only one athlete from each NOC per weapon, will qualify for the Olympic Games by name, as follows: Two from Europe, two from Asia-Oceania, one from America, and one from Africa. Individual senior AOR by zone qualifying is designated for NOCs that do not have any athletes qualified in the relevant weapon through team qualification. Under no circumstances, a NOC may qualify more than three athletes per weapon to compete at the games.
