Legendary Indian athlete Milkha Singh has been admitted to a hospital in Mohali on Monday. The decision was taken after a drop in his level of oxygen due to the COVID-19. This information was confirmed by his son Jeev Milkha Singh who further added that the condition of his father was stable.

The 91-year-old had tested positive for COVID-19 on the evening of May 20. He was taken to the Fortis hospital on Monday as a precautionary measure.

Milkha Singh’s wife Nirmal Kaur and son Jeev have stated that the legendary athlete was not feeling well. There was also a drop in oxygen level, with the athlete suffering from dehydration. The reason behind the latter could be diarrhoea and vomiting.

“He has been hospitalised. He was weak and not eating since yesterday, so we had to hospitalise him. Though his parameters seemed alright, we thought it is safer to have him admitted where he would be under supervision of senior doctors,” said Jeev Milkha Singh in an interaction with PTI as quoted by India Today.

“He is under good care of doctors there. He is a strong man, always positive and will recover soon,” added the ace golfer. Jeev reached India on Saturday from Dubai after his father tested positive last week.

Milkha Singh represented India in three Olympics

Milkha Singh is considered one of the tallest icons in India. The ‘Flying Sikh’ overcame numerous obstacles outside the sports field just like the great Muhammad Ali. He rightly shines as one of the brightest stars of Indian sports.

He was the first Indian athlete to win an individual athletics Gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, a record which remained intact till 2010. Milkha represented India in three Olympics from 1956 to 1964. He was awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour, in recognition of his sporting achievements.

The race for which Milkha is best remembered is his fourth-place finish in the 400 metres final at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome. He had entered as one of the favourites. Milkha led the race for some time before easing off, allowing others to pass him and proceed ahead.
