Asian Rowing Championships: India win six medals to end brilliant campaign

India finished what was an outstanding tournament with two gold medals and four silver medals.

Arvind Singh, a senior rower, won gold in the lightweight men’s single sculls event, while his countrymen won three silver medals, as India finished the Asian Rowing Championship on a high note here on Sunday. Arvind outpaced his competitors with a time of 7:55.942s. Arvind, who finished 11th in the men’s lightweight double sculls with Arjun Lal Jat at the Tokyo Olympics, defeated competitors from Uzbekistan, China, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand. 

India finished the championship with three more silver medals: men’s lightweight double sculls, men’s quadruple sculls, and men’s coxless four events. India finished the continental event with two gold medals and four silver medals.

Ashish Phugat and Sukhjinder Singh won silver in the lightweight men’s double sculls with a time of 7:12.568s, while Bittu Singh, Jakar Khan, Manjeet Kumar, and Sukhmeet Singh finished second in a photo-finish time of 6:33:661s, missing out on gold by 0.523 seconds. In the men’s coxless fours final, Jasveer Singh, Punit Kumar, Gurmeet Singh, and Charanjeet Singh won silver with a time of 6:51.661s.

“Overall, another good performance by India. Congratulations and best wishes to all the rowers, coaches, support staff and backend administrators, who managed the team all these months,” secretary general of Rowing Federation of India MV Sriram said in a statement.

“A special mention to Ismail Baig, who consistently, year on year, turns out sterling results for India,” it added.
