Mexico dominated the podium by winning three gold medals in the team events at the recently conducted Pan American Archery Championships 2022 from November 21 to November 27, 2022. They did it by accomplishing the gold in men’s recurve, women’s compound, and women’s recurve events. Marcus D’Almeida of Brazil elevated silver to gold in the men’s individual recurve competition. Marcus is a two-time Olympian, who won gold at the Hyundai Archery World Cup in Paris in June and silver at the 2021 world championships and is one of recurve archery’s emerging talents.

Even, the USA produced a solid performance by winning the men’s team gold, the mixed team bronze, and two individual gold medals in compound events.  Paige Pearce of California won her first World Archery target competition of the year after breaking in a new bow a few days before the tournament. One of biggest surprises was Nick Kappers’ victory (WR 130) in the men’s solo event, defeating favorite Miguel Becerra.

The championships on Santiago’s penultimate day saw Mexico take three of the four team gold medals. The nation grabbed the women’s compound, women’s recurve, and men’s recurve events, except for the men’s compound at the Bernardo O’Higgins National Military Academy. In the women’s compound final, Mariana Bernal, Andrea Becerra, and Dafne Quintero began the proceedings by defeating Sara López, Alejandra Usquiano, and Maria Valentina Suárez of Colombia by a thin margin that ended in a shoot-off. After the first five rounds, the score was tied at 230-230. Bernal then clinched the victory by hitting the target closest to the center.

In the women’s recurve competition, Alejandra Valencia, Ana Vazquez, and Aida Roman defeated USA 5-4. Mexico then finished a good day as Matias Grande, Angel Alvarado, and Emilio Trevio led the challenge with a commanding 6-2 victory over Colombia in the men’s recurve final. The US claimed victory in the men’s compound in the lone final that didn’t feature team Mexico. James Lutz, Nick Kappers, and Sawyer Sullivan (USA) defeated Colombia by 234–233, thus denying Colombia a title for the second time in the finals.
