Hall is one of the few players who can say he’s broken scoring records once held by Wayne Gretzky. The first to fall was Gretzky’s Edmonton Oilers record for the fastest hat trick from the start of a game. Hall broke that mark when he scored a natural hat trick in the first 7:53 of a 4-0 win against the Vancouver Canucks on March 30, 2013. He broke a second one for the fastest back-to-back goals in Oilers history by one second.
The rest of Gretzky’s records became a little safer. When the Oilers traded him to the New Jersey Devils for defenseman Adam Larsson. That deal brought to New Jersey one of the best young forwards in the NHL. A player who ranked in the top three on his team in scoring in five of his first six seasons and finished among the League’s top 10 scorers twice in his first four seasons.
Hall was born in Calgary, the only child of Steve Hall and Kim Strba. His father was a former Canadian Football League player for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Toronto Argonauts, and Ottawa Rough Riders. Hall’s mother introduced him to organized hockey at age five. While his father maintained a backyard rink every winter which Hall and his friends practiced relentlessly. His family moved to Kingston, Ontario, in 2005, where he attended high school at Frontenac Secondary School and St. Anne Catholic High School.
Shortly after being selected first overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Hall signed his first professional contract. This was the second-most lucrative rookie contract in Oilers history. Hall represented Canada at the 2008 IIHF World U18 Championships in Kazan, Russia, as one of five 16-year-olds. He was fifth in tournament scoring, with nine points in seven games, helping Canada to a gold medal. As an alternate captain to Matt Duchene, he returned to Canada’s under-18 team. Also earned a second gold medal at the 2008 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.
