The Vegas Golden Knights will take on Arizona Coyotes at T-Mobile Arena (Las Vegas) in the NHL Preseason game on October 4. The Golden Knights entered the 2021-22 season as one of the frontrunners to win the Stanley Cup. They finished the pandemic-shortened 2021 season level by scoring points with the Colorado Avalanche, defeating the same Avs in the second round of the playoffs before losing to the Cinderella Montreal Canadiens in the semifinals. In November, the Golden Knights added a player they felt they were lacking to their roster, and Buffalo acquired Jack Eichel from the Sabers to finally score his coveted top-line center. Vegas knew Achel wouldn’t debut for months due to having record replacement surgery, but the plan was to finally have a cohesive and loaded roster ready for playoff time. That was it.

Unfortunately for the Golden Knights, a spot in the NHL playoffs is not guaranteed. Vegas struggled with a combination of injuries and salary his cap his navigation and was unable to create an ideal roster for more than a few games at a time. They finished the season with a 43-31-8 record, finishing ninth in the Western Conference. It was an amazing finish for a team that had seen little success since entering the league in 2017. The question now is whether the 2021-22 season has been an anomaly for the Golden Knights, or whether the team’s fall season has been The Golden Knights finished 12th in the league last season with 266 goals.

With a roster that includes the likes of Mark Stone, Eichel, and Max Pacioretti, it was Jonathan Marchessault and Chandler Stephenson who led Vegas offensively with 66 and 64 points respectively. Their third highest-scoring forward was Evgeny Dadonov, whom the team was desperately trying to drop before the end of the deal, hoping to place him somewhere on the no-trade list. The problem with Vegas is that its major players have never been healthy at the same time. Both Stone and Pacholetti were injured in the second game of the season and were sidelined for over a month, and Achel did not debut until February. Overall, Pacholetti scored 39 points in 37 games, Stone scored 30 points in 37 games, and Achel scored 25 points in 34 games.
