Ranking the top 10 NHL players so far in the 2022/23 season

The NHL is in full flow and has seen a lot of ups and downs ever since the start of the season in October. Some of the big hitters have not been performing well and there have been some surprising teams that are currently leading their respective conference tables. The Boston Bruins, led by Patrice Bergeron lead the Eastern Conference Atlantic Division with 19 wins from 22 games. New Jersey Devils top the Metropolitan Division in a surprising turn of events as they too have won 19 games so far.

The Dallas Stars lead the Western Conference Central Division with 13 wins and 30 points in what has been a largely underwhelming division with the defending champions, Colorado Avalanche in third place with 25 points. The Vegas Golden Knights top the Western Conference Pacific Division with 17 wins and 35 points.

Over the last two months, there have been a lot of great performances from players from different teams and in this article, we will take a look at the top 10 players of the 2022/23 NHL season so far.

1. Connor McDavid (Edmonton Oilers)

The Edmonton Oilers sit in fourth place in the Pacific Division table with 24 points. Since the start of the season, the Oilers have won 12 games and in most of those games, the one player that has stood out for them has been Connor McDavid. The 25 year old Canadian has 39 points so far and that includes 17 goals and 22 assists from 22 games. He has had 87 shots on goal so far with a shooting percentage of 19.5. The Oilers will look to McDavid to move forward as the playoffs get near and will hope that their talisman gets to maintain his good form in the NHL.

2. Nikita Kucherov (Tampa Bay Lightning)

The Tampa Bay Lightning finished as runners up last season and this season sit in third place in the Eastern Conference Atlantic Division with 13 wins and 27 points. In most of those wins, Nikita Kucherov was instrumental for the Lightning as he so far has 10 goals and 25 assists in the 22 games that he has played in. He also has 84 shots on goal so far with a shot percentage of 11.9.

3. Leon Draisaitl (Edmonton Oilers)

Leon Draisaitl has had a good season so far for the Edmonton Oilers. In the 22 games that he played in, he has scored 13 goals and has delivered 20 assists for his teammates. In the power play, Leon has 16 points in what has been instrumental for the Canadian outfit. He has had 73 shots on goal so far with a shooting percentage of 17.8. Him along with Connor McDavid will be crucial for the Oilers as they will look to make a statement come playoff time.

4. Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh Penguins)

A bonafide legend in his own right, Sidney Crosby has continued to defy the odds and has arguably been Pittsburgh’s best player so far this season. Despite being 35 years old, “Sid the Kid”, has been in fine form as he has 31 points in the NHL so far with 12 goals and 19 assists. The Penguins sit in fourth place in the Eastern Conference Metropolitan Division with 26 points and Crosby will be crucial if they are to make the playoffs this season.

5. Josh Morrissey (Winnipeg Jets)

The Winnipeg Jets have had a good NHL season so far as they sit in second place in the Western Conference Central Division with 29 points and 14 wins. There is one player that has been immense for them this season and that is none other than defenceman Josh Morrissey. Morrissey has played 21 games so far this season and has 25 points to his name with five goals and 20 assists. With Winnipeg in second place at this point in the season and with Josh Morrissey in defense, expect them to go far come playoff time.

6. Cale Makar (Colorado Avalanche)

Defending champions Colorado Avalanche sit in third place in the Western Conference Central Division table with 25 points from 20 games as they have racked up 12 wins. Defenceman Cale Makar was instrumental as the Avalanche won the Stanley Cup last season and he has picked up from where he left off as he has 21 points so far this season. Out of the 20 games that he has played, Makar has scored six goals and has dished out 15 assists for his teammates.

7. Linus Ullmark (Boston Bruins)

The Boston Bruins have been in great form this season as they sit atop the Eastern Conference Atlantic Division with 38 points and a whopping 19 wins. During that time, they have only conceded 48 goals and that has been down to the brilliance of goaltender Linus Ullmark. Linus has played 16 games so far and has been on the winning side in 13 of them. He has faced a total of 461 shots and has saved 431 of them. Conceding only 30 goals with a save percentage of .935, Linus has been crucial for the Bruins and will hope to continue this form into the playoffs.

8. Connor Hellebuyck (Winnipeg Jets)

Another goaltender makes it to the top 10 list and this time it is Winnipeg shot stopper Connor Hellebuyck. Connor has so far played 17 games and started in all of them in the NHL. He helped the Jets win 11 games as he faced 563 shots on his goal and has made 524 saves so far. He has conceded 39 goals with a save percentage of .931.

9. Mikko Rantanen (Colorado Avalanche)

The Colorado Avalanche have another one of their players on the list and it is their alternate captain, Mikko Rantanen. The Finn has been instrumental for the Avs this season as he has played in 20 games so far and has 29 points to his name with 13 goals and 16 assists. He has 14 power play points to his name in the NHL this season with three goals in the power play. With the Avalanche looking to retain their trophy, Mikko will be hoping to play a huge part in his team’s quest to lift the Stanley Cup once again.

10. Bo Horvat (Vancouver Canucks)

The Vancouver Canucks have had a very underwhelming NHL season so far as they sit in sixth place in the Western Conference Pacific Division with 21 points from 23 games. Despite their struggles, one player has stood out for them and has led the team by example. It is none other than Canucks captain Bo Horvat. Horvat has played in 23 games this season and has 24 points to his name with 17 goals and seven assists. If the Canucks are to get out of their rut this season, Horvat will be crucial going forward.
