The Pittsburgh Penguins will take on Buffalo Sabres at PPG Paints Arena (Pittsburgh) in the NHL Preseason game on October 7. The Penguins are another club racing it back, much like the Boston Bruins, who were the subject of our most recent article. Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang, two franchise stalwarts, were able to return to Pittsburgh this summer, and the Penguins also acquired some great components through trade. They traded John Marino to the New Jersey Devils for Ty Smith and a 2023 third-round pick, sending Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehling to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Michael Matheson and a fourth-round pick. In addition, the team welcomed back Kasperi Kapanen and added Josh Archibald and Danton Heinen as depth players.

There is no questioning of the team’s skill. Sidney Crosby, Jake Guentzel, Evgeni Malkin, and Bryan Rust make up the top six, while Jeff Carter on the third line puts the icing on the cake. Smith and Petry have given the blueline a different appearance, but both should be able to perform well in supporting positions. Tristan Jarry, who will once more start most of the games in goal, is coming off a strong year in which he posted a 34-18-6 record and a.919 save percentage. The Penguins lost a close seven-game series against the New York Rangers in the first round of the playoffs, a series they probably should have won. This Pittsburgh squad was created with the goal of competing in the Metropolitan Division.
