Both the Tampa Bay Lightning and New York Rangers are starting the NHL season in 2022–23 with high expectations. The Lightning, who made their third straight appearance in the Stanley Cup Final but were defeated by the Colorado Avalanche in six games, are seeking to improve and win their third championship in as many years. After falling to the Lightning in the Eastern Conference Final, the Rangers seek to take the next step in their pursuit of the Stanley Cup. Last season, they made a significant stride forward by reaching that final. The opening night game should be a memorable one because both teams are expected to have tremendous seasons.

The Lightning have been the NHL’s poster team in recent years, taking home the Stanley Cup in 2020 and 2021 while also making an appearance in the Final the previous year. As the team lost Ondrej Palat to free agency, it is hoped that the attack, which averaged 3.48 goals per game last season, can continue to be effective. The team will rely on Steven Stamkos, Brayden Point, and Nikita Kucherov to help lead the offense after the trio combined for 95 goals and 138 assists last season to fuel the top two lines. Victor Hedman, a defenseman, will try to keep providing a spark from the point after recording 20 goals and 65 assists in the previous campaign.
