The Montreal Canadiens will take on Ottawa Senators at Bell Centre (Montreal) in the NHL Preseason game on October 4. In the training camp for the Montreal Canadiens with little over a week left, Juraj Slafkovsky made a statement. The 6-foot-4, the 238-pound left winger played against a Toronto Maple Leafs club that had three of its top six defensemen, its starting goaltender, and its top two lines iced. He also looked like the man the Canadiens selected first overall at the NHL Draft in July. In addition to being noteworthy on almost all of his 19 shifts, he led his team with eight shot attempts, delivered a hit, and recorded a takeaway. He also came oh-so-close to scoring his first goal on many occasions. Slafkovsky scored one goal and several more with Martin St. Louis, the Canadiens’ head coach.

After the Canadiens’ 5-1 loss against the Maple Leafs to drop to 0-5 in the preseason, St. Louis observed, “I noticed he had a lot of hops, a lot more confidence with the puck, and, with where he was on the ice, you could tell he was in the game.” The issue is whether or not a few more will show whether Slafkovsky is prepared to begin the season in Montreal. Keeping him in Montreal through the preseason makes sense, regardless of his performance (or lack thereof), to see what he can accomplish when it counts. In contrast to his somewhat disappointing offensive performances with TPS Turku in the uber-defensive Finnish Liiga last season, Slafkovsky dramatically improved his game to lead Team Slovakia in scoring at both the Olympics and the world championship, propelling him into the lead position at the draught. It may be interesting to see whether he responds similarly to begin his NHL career.
