The Edmonton Oilers will take on Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Place (Edmonton) in the NHL Preseason game on October 3. It’s fortunate that the Edmonton Oilers Top 6 is already mostly determined. It may be a weak offensive season if they weren’t looking for some assistance from this group of training camp invitees. The Oilers suffered a 4-0 defeat against a Calgary Flames team that featured 14 players who will be NHL regulars this season, just two nights after losing 3-0 in Seattle. We counted seven NHL regulars in Edmonton, but neither a Top 6 forward nor a Top 3 defenseman were among them. The best forward for the Oilers was Ryan McLeod, who wasted a lot of time skating in the Saddledome on Wednesday.
He finished the night with zero shots on goal in 21:09 of ice time, which was the most among Edmonton’s forwards. He has first-line pace, but he still has to work on his third-line hands. According to head coach Jay Woodcroft, there are certain offensive possibilities where McLeod “may want to do some different things, upon second thought.” Woodcroft enjoyed how McLeod looked against a primarily NHL Flames group. He can definitely skate with them. It’s now about devising a strategy for being offensively effective against them. This is the allure of NHL preseason hockey, and we’ll probably witness it when the Flames arrive in Edmonton on Friday. In addition to their top three centers and five of their top seven defensemen, Calgary also fielded Jonathan Huberdeau, Tyler Toffoli, and Blake Coleman on the wings. The first and second quarters were spent with starter Jacob Markstrom in the net.
